I was asked a few months ago if I’d be willing to donate my time with some parents in the poorest school district in Baltimore County. I respected the “ask” and happily said “yes.”

(I’ve been afforded life changing opportunities and experiences because I had the courage to ask.)

Many of the parents in this morning’s group struggle because the adults in their life modeled similar behaviors. They now likely repeat these same patterns with their children at this school.

My goal was to leave them with information, motivation, and mostly importantly, experience to begin a process of increasing their self awareness. With self awareness comes power, choice, and responsibility. The difference between an unconscious reaction and a conscious response.

And they had fun.

That’s really important for me.

Because life can be tough. And it’s relatively short. But we can do our most important work while having some fun along the way.

I left this morning’s group with more energy. So did the parents based on their feedback. We did good work and enjoyed ourselves.

It’s my hope that they took this spirit back into their homes tonight.
